St. Thomas HS (Houston) & Woodlands (Houston) Claim State Crowns

The Woodlands scored an unconverted try as time expired to put a exclamation mark on the hardest hitting and most tightly contested game of the of the Texas High School Rugby Championships in its 8-0 win over previously undefeated Plano.  The win earned The Woodlands, which slotted its penalty kick in the opening minutes,  the winner’s cup in the High School-Club Conference.

In the High School Conference, St. Thomas of Houston defended its title, rolling to a convincing 48-7 win over Austin Westlake, a scoreline that does not do justice to the intensity of the match which Westlake actually led early on.  The Eagles have now claimed four of the last five state championships.

Stony Point rallied for a 22-11 come-from-behind win in the Plate Championship over first-year program Lake Travis in a battle of Austin-area teams.

Alliance of North Texas defeated the El Paso Spartans for third place in the Club Conference; Jesuit Dallas claimed third in the School Conference with its win over El Paso Cathedral, and Kingwood (Houston) overtook Allen (Dallas area) late in the match to take third in the Plate Division.

In action on Saturday, Plano defeated El Paso Spartans as The Woodlands dispatched Alliance.  St. Thomas schooled El Paso Cathedral and Westlake trumped Jesuit Dallas.  Kingwood fell to Lake Travis, while Stony Point scored at the death to defeat Allen.

The North Texas City of Irving, the Plano and Alliance clubs, and Tournament Chairman Nick Marketos are all to be congratulated for hosting a great event at a terrific venue.  See you in Austin next year!

Youth Rugby Development Officer Open in Houston

Thanks to generous grants from Coach Across America, USA Rugby, and the Houston Lost Afternoon Rugby Luncheon, Rugby Texas has been designated a host SBRO (State Based Rugby Organization) for a Youth Rugby Development Officer.

According to the job description, “the Rugby Development Officer is responsible for growing all aspects of youth and high school rugby throughout the state through the creation and implementation of a state development plan.”

The on-line application form can be found at: http://usngbjobs.teamworkonline.com/teamwork/r.cfm?i=44228

“We are extremely pleased to have been singled-out for this position, which grew out of a personal visit to Texas by USA Rugby Youth Director Kurt Weaver.  The school officials he met with encouraged him to put together a financing plan for us that will have zero impact on the Rugby Texas budget,” noted Paul Mabry, Executive Director of Rugby Texas.  “The key piece in the deal was the financial support of the Houston Lost Afternoon Rugby Luncheon, which dedicates the proceeds from its annual gathering to local youth rugby projects.”  (The Lost Afternoon previously funded the 2011 HS clinics conducted in Austin, Houston and Dallas by New Zealand coach Scott “Razor” Robertson.)

Tickets to the 2012 luncheon on June 22 (the day before the USA-Italy Test) are available at www.lostafternoon.org.

It is hoped that the new RDO can be on the job before the important Conference on the Game in Houston, May 19.
